Nella larsen (1891 - 1964), was a Harlem Renaissance American writer that only published two books. Quicksand was her first book and was partly autobiographical. The story is about Helga Crane and her search to fit into either white society or black society. The daughter of a white mother and a black father as left her unwanted or a curiosity in both societies. Helga is not satisfied with her life and frequently thinks that life will be better in new surroundings. For a time, life is better once she moves on but never for very long. In the end she winds up stuck in what she thought would make her very happy. Although the story is beautifully written it is hard to like Helga because she is materialistic and thinks only of herself.
